What can I do?
If you want to know why we need to support the post strikes, click here. But how?
1. Visit a picket line
Visit our Next strikes page to find out where your nearest picket line will be, and when to visit.
2. Do a collection at work
Nnot only can you raise money for the hardship fund and show posties they have real support, you can also use this as a chance to talk to others about the issues behind the strike, and maybe even if there is anything similar about what’s happening in Royal Mail and at your job. Download a post strikes collection sheet here or use the official one.
3. Send a donation – if you can’t do a collection and give it to a shop steward on the picket line…
The London Division’s hardship fund urgently needs donations: postal workers in London will have lost up to 20 days pay by November 9th: they have been striking for roughly one day a week since June. To contribute, send cheques payabe to CWU London Divisional Committee to John Denton, CWU London Region Secretary, Second Floor, 33-31 Dallington St, London, EC1V 0BB
4. Invite a post worker to speak at a meeting of your union branch
Your local support group may have contacts for post workers able to come and give a short talk about why they are striking and why the dispute matters. If not, why not ask someone on your local picket line, or phone your local CWU branch. Use the CWU’s branch finder here.
If possible, combine with…
5. Pass a motion at your union branch to make a donation to the strike hardship fund
Has your branch passed a motion? email a copy to supporttheposties@googlemail.com. Model motion coming soon – watch this space.
6. Join your local support group
The CWU has published a list of contact points for support groups. If you don’t see a contact number there, contact your local tradescouncil and ask if they have a support group. If not, why not organise a support group in your area? Let us know about you support group, contact details and next meeting and we will host it on this site!
7. Write a letter to your local paper
There’s sure to be plenty of grumbling letters in the local paper already – why not send them an email stating why you support the strikes, and letting readers know where and when to visit a picket line?
8. Write to your MP
The CWU is encouraging you to click on www.writetothem.com and encourage your MP to sign Early Day Motion 2035:
Trackback URLThat this House welcomes the proposals put forward by the Communication Workers Union seeking to find a resolution to the current postal dispute, in particular their offer to explore the possibility of third party mediation; and calls on the Government to do all in its power to ensure that Royal Mail responds positively to the union’s proposal.
